China is making great progress in many scientific fields, including space research (since it wants to build a long spaceship). The country, according to a report by Harvard, is destined to overcome the United States in the battle for domination over key technologies of the 21st century.
In particular, the authors of the study examined a series of fundamental technologies designed to define the 21st century, namely artificial intelligence, 5G, quantum information science, semiconductors, biotechnology and green energy (China has already achieved quantum supremacy). In some technologies, such as 5G and quantum information, the report notes that China has already established domination, while in others it will outnumber the US within 10 years.
“China cannot become an industrial giant in the 21st century. Its population is too large and its gross domestic product too small,” one could read in a 1992 Time article, and in the new report experts showed how China has been underestimated in recent years.
“The Chinese technological ecosystem could be on par with Silicon Valley by 2025 in terms of dynamism, innovation and competitiveness,” the report says. This should “bring the United States to mobilise a proportionate response to the challenge,” said Graham Allison, the leading author of the report.
