Here Are How Many Steps A Day You Have To Take To Be Well: No, It’s Not 10,000

Exercise is good for no matter what, even if you do not train every day or for hours and hours. Walking is also important, and although many believe that the minimum number of steps to be well is 10,000, a new study published in the JAMA Network Open magazine, reconsiders this issue.

A team led by the epidemiologist Amanda Paluch of the University of Massachusetts examined a group of 2,000 people, between middle-aged men and women (with an average age of 45 years), from four different cities in the States. People wore accelerometers that monitored the daily steps count and their intensity during the wake-up hours.

The experiment started in 2005 and participants were followed at regular intervals in the years until 2018, the year in which 72 participants had passed to a better life. The observational nature of the study cannot draw definitive statements, but it can offer important links, useful also for future studies.

Researchers have found that individuals who made at least 7,000 steps a day had a risk of premature death less than 50 to 70% than those who made less than 7,000 steps a day. The intensity of the step – the experts discover – has had no importance. Results show that increasing the volume of daily steps is important to reduce mortality, but doing more has not been associated with any health benefit.

“More than 10,000 steps per day have not been associated with further reduction of mortality risk,” the researchers explain. The new 7,000 step threshold is certainly an easier target to achieve than the 10,000 and could push many more people to do it. Obviously this is not the “final number,” but it is certainly a great starting point.

“In the coming years, the number of articles published linking the counting of steps with mortality will increase substantially, since many other studies have completed their measurements after 10 years or more follow-up,” says the researcher in physical activity Nicole Spartano of the
