It has been a few years since the reunion of the cast of Star Trek: Voyager, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the series, but among fans the attention is still great. A user, evidently passionate about the universe, decided to recreate a functioning version of the ubiquitous tricorder.
Youtuber Mangy_Dog, an expert in UI and electronics, through its own channel documented the creation of the Tricorder, which took more than a year.
In a series of films (of which we propose the first part in the news opening), Mangy_Dog has deepened the design and engineering process at the base of his “Voyager Tricorder V2.” A process that has put youtuber in front of a number of challenges, including the one related to custom PCB and the supply of high quality displays. In the second film (which you find at the bottom), instead, focuses on the custom user interface and the animations created for the operating system, all rendered on the fly. Finally, the third film explores the internal hardware, and comes back to talk about custom PCB created ad hoc for the project.
As you can see from the videos, the LCD screen shows what appears to be the real interfaces seen in the TV series. On the body there are several touch sensitive buttons that change modes and allow to activate secret functions following prolonged pressure. The engineer also integrated a series of flashing LED buttons.
