Tcl, What Happened To The Folding Smartphone? For Now You Will Not Do, The Reason

2 Mins read

After officializing the new range of Mini LED 8K TV for 2021, TCL has returned to make announcements. However, this time there is bad news for fans of the smartphone world.

Do you remember those prototype folding and roll-out devices that TCL showed in 2020, as well as the so-called TCL Fold ‘n Roll? Well, forget everything: for the moment it’s just a concept. The company decided to cancel the smartphone that was to represent the rival of the folding model Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G. Maybe there’s something to do with rumors about possible arrangements between TCL and Samsung linked to OLED panels? We cannot know for sure, but what is clear is that TCL will not respect its “promise” to market a “economical” folder during 2021.

On the other hand, the aforementioned Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G has already lowered the cost of folding smartphones, since the starting price in Italy is 1099 euros. That is precisely why TCL decided to abandon the project. In fact, also because of the well-known lack of components, according to the reports by PhoneArena and SlashGear, the minimum price that the brand could propose for its device was around 800 dollars.

However, as explained by Stefan Strait, TCL’s Chief Marketing Officer, at CNET’s microphones: “If anyone can spend $800, he can spend $1,000. […] Probably aiming for a brand he trusts most and has known for years.” In other words, the “blame” seems to be Samsung’s.

In any case, according to TCL the market is not yet ready and in fact the brand has decided to “stay out” for at least 12/18 months. The company does not exclude, however, the creation of a folding smartphone in the future. However, when it does, it will be a new device that will not have much to do with Project Chicago (this is the code name of the model that was to come out this year).

The latter had to have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor, as well as 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal memory. Then there was a 6.67 inch AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution and a 1.1 inch external screen. The technical data sheet was then “completed” by a 3.545 mAh battery and a double rear camera with 48MP main sensor. The dimensions were 164.8 x 78.1 x 7.35 mm.

In any case, images of the design that Project Chicago had to have appeared online. Find everything in the back of the news.
